The K5 didn’t see any major changes for 2022 but it ranks highly in the midsize cars class due to its upscale styling and great safety ratings.

The current generation of the 2022 Hyundai Sonata was introduced in 2020 and hasn’t changed much since. Still, the Sonata packs a punch with a roomy interior and a bunch of standard features.

As you click through this slideshow you can expect to examine how the 2022 Kia K5 and the 2022 Hyundai Sonata perform across a series of categories.

Keep in mind that we periodically update our scores and rankings as new data and expert research become available, so the scores in this article may not match up with the scores in our rankings and individual vehicle reviews.

Price

Winner: 2022 Kia K5

The 2022 Kia K5 has an affordable starting price of $23,790. It is available in five trim levels with pricing topping out at $31,190 for the GT trim.

Pricing for the 2022 Hyundai Sonata starts at $24,350 for the base SE and goes up to $34,250 for the Limited trim. The Sonata is also available in five trim levels.

Reliability

Winner: 2022 Hyundai Sonata

The 2022 Sonata has a predicted reliability score of 83 out of 100 by J.D. Power, while the 2022 K5 has a predicted reliability rating of 79 out of 100.

A score of 91-100 is considered the Best, 81-90 is Great, 70-80 is Average, and 0-69 is Fair.

The Sonata and K5 are also covered by some of the best warranties available today, with five-year/60,000-mile basic warranties and 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranties.

Seat Comfort

Winner: 2022 Kia K5

At first glance, the 2022 Kia K5 and the 2022 Hyundai Sonata may not seem too different when it comes to their seats. They both have room for up to five across two rows and offer supportive seating throughout. The K5 offers a bit less rear-seat headroom, but the Sonata has less hip room. You should check out both models to see which one fits you best.

Cargo Space

Winner: Tie

The 2022 Sonata and 2022 K5 have identical trunks that offer 16-cubic feet of cargo space. That’s plenty for a weekend trip or grabbing weekly groceries.

The Sonata offers standard 60/40 split-folding rear seats. The K5’s base trim does not have a split-folding rear seat, but every other trim level does. Both models are available with hands-free trunk lids.

Interior Quality

Winner: 2022 Hyundai Sonata

The 2022 Kia K5 and the 2022 Hyundai Sonata both offer upscale, well-built cabins. While they aren’t luxury vehicles, they offer good interior quality at a reasonable price point for the midsize class. However, the K5 is fitted with some plastic trim pieces that cheapen the overall effect, giving the win to the Sonata in this category.

Interior Technology

Winner: Tie

The 2022 Kia K5 and 2022 Hyundai Sonata both come standard with 8-inch touch-screen infotainment systems and six-speaker stereos.

They also feature Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. In the base Kia K5 includes wireless connectivity for these features, however upper trims with the 10.25-inch touch screen lose wireless smartphone integration.

Both models are also available with wireless device charging, 12-speaker Bose audio systems, and remote start.

Acceleration

Winner: Tie

The base engine in the 2022 Kia K5 is a 180-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder. This setup offers adequate power around town and on the interstate. If you’re after a little more oomph, an upgraded 290-horsepower is available in the GT trim.

The 2022 Sonata features a base engine with 191-horsepower. Upgraded engine options include a 180-horsepower option and a 290-horsepower option in the Sonata N Line model. All setups do a decent job of launching the Sonata off the line.

Both sedans feature eight-speed automatic transmissions in their base configurations with the option of dual-clutch eight speed transmissions with the more powerful engines.

Fuel Economy

Winner: Tie

These two sedans feature almost identical gas mileage thanks to nearly identical powertrains. With the base engines, the 2022 Hyundai Sonata and the 2022 Kia K5 return 27 in the city and 37 mpg on the highway.

The more powerful variants of these sedans offer a trade-off for fuel efficiency. The 2022 Sonata Limited earns 23 mpg on the city and 33 on the highway while the K5 returns 24 in the city and 32 on highway.

Ride and Handling

Winner: 2022 Kia K5

The 2022 K5 and 2022 Sonata both offer some of the smoothest rides in the midsize class. Their suspension setups allow them to glide across most surfaces with ease. Their handling is poised, but not sporty. The K5 is taking the win here thanks to its available all-wheel-drive system to give you more traction when you need it. The Sonata only comes with front-wheel drive.

Safety

Winner: 2022 Hyundai Sonata

The 2022 Kia K5 earned the Top Safety Pick+ designation and the 2022 Hyundai Sonata earned the Top Safety Pick accolade from Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Both sedans earned top marks in all categories from IIHS.

National Highway Traffic Safety Association gave both the 2022 Hyundai Sonata and 2022 Kia K5 overall ratings of five out of five stars. The Sonata outperformed the K5 in NHTSA’s individual tests, however. The Sonata earned five stars in the side crash and rollover tests, and four stars in the front crash test. The K5, on the other hand, five stars in just the side crash test, with four stars in the frontal crash and rollover tests

Standard safety features on both models include a number of helpful technology like pedestrian detection and lane keep assist.

The Winner Is …

A Tie

As you might expect from these two incredibly similar vehicles, this overall comparison has ended in a tie. However, if we look into the data, there are some areas that each model outperforms its rival to help you narrow down your decision.

The K5 has a lower base price, roomier seats and more poised handling (when equipped with the optional all-wheel drive).

The Sonata, on the other hand, offers you a higher predicted reliability score, a more premium interior design, and a higher safety score.

In the end, neither of these midsize cars is a poor choice. You’d be wise to test drive both models to see exactly how they differ and to decide which one better fits your needs.

By Nick Nelson April 14, 2022, at 9:19 a.m. Sonata vs. K5: Which Is Better?
